Recently Austin was named the top economic powerhouse in the state of Texas, beating out Houston and Dallas. For Austin residents that could very well be the nail in the coffin for the long held Austin moniker "Keep Austin Weird". But we think...not so fast. Austin still has plenty of "weird" left in her, you just need to know where to look:
1. The HOPE Gallery
One would think that New York City would be home to the largest graffiti parks in North America, but that would be incorrect. One of the most unique places in the city is the Hope Outdoor Gallery and if you haven’t seen it, you should go take a gander while you still can. The Austin City Council voted recently to have it “relocated”.
2. Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon
As far as we know, this is one of the ONLY places in Texas where you can play Chicken Poop Bingo every Sunday as you sip on a true Texas native, Lone Star Beer. Pop in to play around of poop and then stay for the music. You’ll be happy that ya did.
3. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure
This funky home is one of a kind with a mish-mesh of things all thrown together. Typically this could create an eyesore, but in this case, it creates an amazing sight to behold. Go check out the Cathedral of Junk.
4. Pin the tail on the Donkey
Every May, Austinites gather at Pease Park to celebrate the birthday of the fantastical A.A. Milne character Eeyore. We’re not really sure why, but does it matter? There are ribbon wrapped May Poles, ice cream, and drum circles, not to mention the wonderfully costumed folks in attendance. A must see, at least once.
5. Let’s not forget the Bats
So, of course this needs to be mentioned because well, they’re BATS! Every spring evening at sunset, 1.5 million bats fly out from under the South Congress bridge to feast on the city's pesky mosquitos. The result is so spectacular that you can even see the cloud of bats from weather radars.
